Reclaiming dignity

Something’s on my mind. It’s been for quite some time. This time I’m onto you.

This is nothing new for me.

There have been several times in my life when I have been forced to reevaluate the choices I’ve made about the people I’ve allowed into my world.

I don’t take such decisions lightly. It requires a long term trend of negative influence and toxicity before I will take such an extreme action.

As a result, I end up tolerating so much more than I should because I don’t want to overreact and make the wrong choice.

Earlier in life…

Teen Spirit

Hello hello hello hello how low…

It was inevitable that I would eventually write an analysis on the quintessential grunge song.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is one of the primary songs that Nirvana is known for, all around the world.

And rightfully so. The song broadcasts edginess and angst through the music and vocal genius of Cobain.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is in the key of F natural minor. Natural minor means that instead of a C Major chord as the dominant, it will rely heavily on the Eb Major chord.

Except that this song doesn’t.

That’s one of the…

The folly of youth

Tony sat in the middle of a large room, waiting for the arrival of his literary mentor as he stared into the illuminated box that contained his latest piece of prose.

It was an idea driven essay on the movie Cruel Intentions, assigned by his professor.

Tony was now in his second year at university. His primary focus of study was music, but he was currently taking a required basic course in literature.

The term was nearly over, and it was his intention to return home for the summer and transfer to a nearby school.

It was already five minutes…

Love, peace, and harmony

With a little love and some tenderness…

Is anyone else ready to see this?

When I consider the lyrics to Hold My Hand by Hootie and the Blowfish, it seems to me that the songwriter had a vision. I almost wonder if that songwriter was a time traveler. Maybe he traveled back to the 90s from the 2020s.

I disabled my personal social media accounts for an entire month and I can’t begin to tell you how liberating it was.

Of course, I still continued to use my writer accounts to promote articles, but I didn’t even glance at the…

My Confession

Photo by Darius Cotoi on Unsplash

It’s okay. If you want my man card, I’ll give it willingly.

So it’s now been years since one of the most popular Disney movies of recent years was released. For the majority of the last decade, the world has been ablaze with the melodic tones of children singing Let It Go. In all fairness, it is a great song.

I hadn’t even heard of Frozen until I heard my then three-year-old son singing the songs from it. …

The Unforgiven

With the twelve tones of the chromatic scale, all of the notes that comprise music as we know it, the combinations and the potential for unique creations are endless.

Despite this, it is common for certain patterns to emerge within the genres of modern music.

For instance, blues will traditionally contain a twelve-bar progression and its own altered scale of notes. The quintessential garden variety pop song primarily consists of major chords that are built upon the first, fourth, and fifth scale degree.

For instance, in the key of C, that would mean C, F, and G chords. …

California here we come

Photo by Jordan Brown on Unsplash

With tropical palm trees, golden sand, and glistening waves, California sounds amazing right about now.

California here we come, right back where we started from.

I heard a band called Phantom Planet sing these lyrics many times at the introduction of one of my favorite shows.

The O.C. is an older series, yet there are rumors of a reboot. Several members of the cast have expressed publicly that they would be interested in such a project.

O.C. actresses Rachel Bilson and Melinda Clarke, who play the roles of Summer Roberts and Julie Cooper Nicholl Roberts, respectively, currently have a podcast…

A fading glimmer

As the sun began to disappear behind the horizon, Tony sat on his front porch with an overwhelming sense of elation flowing from his very soul.

Even the daunting dread of his mother’s plan to relocate and remarry at the end of the week couldn’t shake his excitement. After all, he had made it clear that he wasn’t going and there were other options in town for a home.

Lynn was on her way to pick Tony up, and they were going to San Antonio to see a movie.

The only concern that Tony had was whether or not he…

A dark tone present in three separate genres

Photo by Jason Blackeye on Unsplash

Growing up in the 90s and heavily influenced by the music of the grunge era, I can clearly see a common tone in many of the songs, bands, and genres.

It is dark and bleak despair, devoid of any hope and joy.

In my opinion, this was a defining factor for the generation, and it provides a striking contrast to the previous decade and the positive tones of its hair metal power ballads.

Few would argue that Nirvana was a huge contributor to grunge subculture, and some claim that the death of Kurt Cobain was the beginning of the end…
